Artist's Description

John Adams was selected as one of the Committee of Five to write the Declaration of Independence. While Jefferson was mainly the author, Adams is thought to have edited it along with Benjamin Franklin. It is said that Adams preferred Jefferson write the document. Drawn in graphite on vellum it is a preliminary sketch for a larger painting to be added to a reproduction of the Declaration of Independence.
