Artist's Description
WAITING ON THE TROLLEY takes you back to the heyday of Tampa, Florida's streetcar system. The TECO Line Streetcar System traverses the City of Tampa's downtown area where you are ride these replica streetcars for free.
This drawing was done in colored pencil on Stonehenge paper. This trolley is sitting at the end of line in Ybor City, the passenger is waiting for the conductor to finish switching the electric connection to return to downtown Tampa.
Starting in 1892 the streetcars whisked passengers to and from Ybor City, Ballast Point, Hyde Park and Sulphur Springs. Passengers welcomed the uniformed conductors and the bright Birney Cars were a welcome sight as well as the clang of the bell. Their time ended in 1946 after World War II but in 1984 the Tampa & Ybor Railway Society worked to get the streetcars rolling again. It is currently on display at the Tarpon Springs Art Guild.
